At the request of the homeowners’ association, we insulated the fittings in their boiler room. The HOA wanted to improve sustainability and reduce energy costs. The project involved insulating a distribution system used to heat the apartments in the complex. We insulated several couplings, ball valves, pumps, flanges, butterfly valves, and pipes.

For the client, we prepared an energy savings calculation based on the component list below. Our calculation is based on 6,000 operating hours per year, a boiler efficiency of 85%, and a gas price of €0.63 per m³. These values can all be adjusted in our savings program.

By insulating, the apartment complex saves 13,511.3 kWh annually. This results in an annual saving of €970.96. CO₂ emissions are also reduced by 2.74 tonnes per year — about the same as the emissions of an average car driving 15,580 km. That’s three round trips from Rotterdam to Barcelona!

The investment in the insulation mattresses earned back its cost in approximately 10 months.

Below is an overview of the insulated components and the corresponding energy savings.

Component DN size Quantity (pcs) Energy saved (kWh)
Coupling 50 4 914,8
Pipe 32 0,8 meter 372,7
Ball valve 50 2 228,7
STAD valve 50 2 1600,9
Pump 40 1 1002,4
Pump 50 2 2287,1
Flange 65 4 4023,5
Flange 50 1 857,7
Butterfly valve 80 2 2223,5
