Turbines produce extremely high temperatures. If this heat escapes through the turbine casing, flanges, or inspection points, energy consumption increases and efficiency decreases. By insulating a turbine with custom-made Econtras® insulation jackets, the heat remains in the process, and the turbine runs more efficiently, resulting in lower energy costs.

Why Turbine Insulation is Important

Gas turbines and other power generation turbines can reach surface temperatures exceeding 500°C. Without proper insulation, a significant amount of this energy is lost. With effective turbine insulation, the temperature within the process remains stable, the turbine has to work less hard, and you improve the overall efficiency of the installation. Simultaneously, surfaces become safer to work around, as the external temperature decreases significantly.

Insulation jackets are the ideal solution here, as they accurately follow the complex shapes of turbines and can be easily removed for inspection or maintenance.

Where Does Heat Loss Occur in Turbines?

Heat loss mainly occurs at turbine casings/hoods, flange connections, inspection hatches, inlet and outlet sections, and pipe connections. These are components with varying shapes and temperature differences, which means rigid insulation is often not suitable or durable enough. By insulating a power turbine with custom-made insulation jackets, the insulation fits optimally, and heat loss is kept to a minimum.

Insulating the Turbine with Econtras® Insulation Jackets

Econtras produces insulation jackets that are tailored exactly to the turbine. We determine the correct insulation thickness, materials, and outer covering based on the operating temperatures and the available space around the installation. If technical drawings are unavailable, we measure the turbine on site to ensure every part fits perfectly.

The jackets form a stable, reliable insulating layer that maintains good performance under high temperatures. They can be easily removed and replaced, allowing inspections or overhauls to be carried out quickly without damaging the insulation. Components that need to be opened regularly, such as inspection hatches or flanges, are fitted with smaller, easily removable jackets.

Return on Investment (ROI) of Turbine Insulation

A well-insulated turbine loses less heat, consumes less energy, and performs more consistently. This leads to a reduction in fuel consumption and a decrease in CO₂ emissions. Due to the high temperature differences, the payback period for turbine insulation is often short. The savings quickly accumulate.
